Where Are The Old Schools?

Readers of The ATA Magazine are asked to help with the establishment of a visual archive of the province’s early country schools. Many of these historic buildings are abandoned and deteriorating. Before time, neglect and the elements claim them completely, it is hoped that a photographic record can be compiled.

You Can Help

Let us know the whereabouts of these buildings. All that is required is a simple description using highway numbers referenced to a nearby village or range road and township coordinates.

Tell us what you know about the buildings (school names, current uses, original locations, if they have been moved, and their history).

If possible, provide a photograph. Photos can be print film or electronic.

Bondiss School District No. 3266
The school was built in 1915 and sits on its original site, Range Road 185 and Highway 663. The former school has been converted into a summer cottage.

East Park School District No. 3349
The school, built in 1923, stands on its original site at Township Road 642 and Range Road 201. The school operated until 1951 when it was remodelled as a private residence.

Mountain Trail School District No. 4071
The school building is located south of Saskatoon Mountain, north of the highway from Grande Prairie to Dawson Creek.

Lornedale School District No. 1496
The school was built in 1906 and is located about 20 kilometres southwest of the Hamlet of Ranfurly.

Setting Sun School District No. 2850
The school is located at the intersection of Township Road 410 and Range Road 45, northeast of Metiskow. The school opened in 1912 and closed in 1952, after which it was sold to the community.

Hampton School District No. 843
The school, located between Roundhill and Camrose, operated between 1903 and 1952. It is now used for community functions.
